Video drivers: The root of all evil
I think the #1 problem with the Windows platform is video drivers. Most crashes I see are caused by video drivers. On Friday, I upgraded the video card on our home computer. The rest of the weekend, I was trying to figure out why the computer kept crashing when it awakened from standby or hibernate. The cause: bad video drivers. The solution: using the drivers that were supplied on the CD-ROM, not the latest drivers on the web. This is strange, since conventional wisdom says to upgrade to the latest drivers.
In my experience, I think the drivers for the A-video cards are more stable than the N-video cards. Unfortunately, I had a very specific hardware requirement that limited me to a very specific N-card. Next time, I’m sticking with the A-team.
