Call off the search for the killers
Everywhere I go, I read about the product destined to be the iPod killer. Nobody gets it. The iPod is here to stay. Why? Even if someone built a better device, the fact is that Apple also built an entire ecosystem around the iPod: iTunes, the iTunes Music Store, and a plethora of Apple and third-party accessories. Put another way, I can buy an iPod, an iPod car adaptor, various types of cases, speakers with an integrated dock, a sports strap, a travel charger, external batteries, etc. What can you get for your iRiver, Yepp, Sony, ? What kinds of cases can you get? Is there a car-charger-cradle-adaptor that allows you to change tracks from your factory stereo? Can you plug it into a matching set of speakers? Probably not.
No wonder why Apple has something like 70% market share of the mp3 market. And I’m hardly surprised that Apple.com now features the iPod products before the flagship Mac computers.
