DVDs are not consumer electronics!
I have said for years that a CD player is an appliance, but a DVD player is a computer. Put a CD in a CD player, hit play, and it plays. But put a DVD in the DVD player, and you see the copyright warnings, the welcome from the publisher, and a hierarchical menu. Commentary! Trailers! Cast! Where’s the $*%#$@ movie?!
Now I can officially report that a DVD player is really a computer. The new DVD recorders from Philips have a download section that offers firmware updates. To update the firmware, you download a file to your PC, unzip it, burn it onto a CD-R with the correct settings, and install it into your DVD player. Maybe it improves your player, maybe it breaks it completely. Who knows?
Once again, Alan Cooper was right.
